Prof Mpine Makoe is a distinguished scholar and leader in the field of technology enhanced open and distance learning (ODL), with a career spanning academia, policy development, and international advocacy. She currently serves as the Executive Dean of the College of Education and the National Research Foundation (NRF) rated research professor at the University of South Africa where she was a chair holder of the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) in Open Education Practices and Resources.
She also served as a futures of higher education technical leader for UNESCO’s World Higher Education Conference (WHEC2022). She is a board member of the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE) where she served as an OER ambassador and the founder of its Global Doctoral Consortium. Mpine has been instrumental in shaping ODL policy across Africa where she facilitated the development of policies and led capacity-development programs on design and development of open digital learning material and technology enhanced pedagogy.
She has worked on numerous commissioned research projects for CoL, the British Council, the Council for Higher Education amongst others. Mpine is actively involved in open and distance education associations nationally, regionally and internationally. She also serves as a council member for the Botswana Open University. She holds a PhD and MSc in Educational Technology from the Open University, United Kingdom; MA in Journalism from the University of Michigan, BA in Communication and English and a diploma in journalism from Africa Literature Centre in Zambia.
