High-Level Roundtable on the Protection of Major Sporting Events and the Use of Sports¡¯ Values for the Prevention of Violent Extremism

UNOCT and its partners will hold a ¡°High-Level Round Table on the Protection of Major Sporting Events and the Use of Sports¡¯ Values for the Prevention of Violent Extremism¡± on 27 March 2022 in Doha. Organized by the Global Sports Programme and co-hosted by the State of Qatar on the margins of the Doha Forum, the event will gather Member States (represented through their national focal points), international organizations, sports federations and civil society organizations.

Participants will present achievements of sport values-based initiatives for preventing violent extremism (PVE) while highlighting ongoing efforts on securing major sport events from terrorism threats. The event will also announce a new youth-focused PVE Global Awareness Campaign around sports.
Values integral to sportsmanship on the pitch like teamwork, equality, and mutual respect are important elements for building strong and resilient communities around the globe. As a result, the promotion of safe sporting conduct and its values affect the lives of young men and women far beyond the pitch, allowing them to connect positively and overcome each other¡¯s differences.

About the Programme

The Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and Its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism was launched in 2020 by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), together with its partners, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), and the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), and in close consultation with the Security Council¡¯s Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED).

The programme aims to:

  • Support Member States planning measures to protect major sporting events from terrorist attacks
  • Leverage sport and its values as a tool to prevent violent extremism by guiding Member States and assisting civil society organizations on integrating youth and gender-based policies and practices shaped around sport values for fostering communities¡¯ resilience globally.

The UN Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and Its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism current donors include the State of Qatar, the People¡¯s Republic of China through the United Nations Peace and Development Fund, and the Republic of Korea.
